UKG

Please note that we have a mixed Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten class, with the majority of students of Kindergarten age.

Our full day Kindergarten program is a continuation of our rich Montessori and Reggio based programming. The individual learning style of our program ensures that each child advances at their state of readiness.

Program Details:

The core of the Kindergarten curriculum is language, mathematics, cultural, geography, practical life, and sensorial. In addition to the core Kindergarten curriculum, the child is also presented with history, music and art. Importantly, we must remember play – an important aspect of any early childhood program, which is incorporated into all areas of our program.

UKG1

Language

The language work includes oral language development, written expression, pre-reading and reading (if appropriate), and creative dramatics. The language materials include objects and pictures to be named, matched, labeled and classified to aid vocabulary development. Textured letters allow the child to feel and see the alphabet. Phonics and the moveable alphabet lead the child toward reading. They will also have a reading and spelling program through the year catered to each child’s developmental stage.

UKG2Writing

Moveable alphabets made up of easily manipulated letters are used for the early stages of phonetic word creation, the analysis of words, and spelling. They facilitate early reading and writing tasks during the period when young children are still not comfortable with their own writing skills. Even before the children are comfortable in their writing skills, they spell words, compose sentences and stories, and work on capitalization with the moveable alphabets. A variety of other materials are used to aid the development of the child’s pincer grip and develop their writing skills.

Mathematics

The Montessori concrete manipulative math materials allow the child to internalize the concepts of number, symbol, sequence, operations, and memorization of basic facts. Concepts that are developed include: addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication through work with the advanced Montessori materials such as golden bead material, multiplication board and skip chains. Introduction to the decimal system, units, tens, hundreds, thousands are represented by specially prepared concrete learning materials that show the decimal hierarchy in three-dimensional form. Development of the concept of “dynamic” addition and subtraction is carried out through the manipulation of the concrete math materials.

UKG3Cultural

Cultural materials provide opportunities for the child to learn about culture, biology (botany and zoology), geography, history and science. In addition, we deliver rich program information about different culture’s icons, food, music, and art.

Geography

Geography is the study of the life of man, the way humans live, the study of the features of the earth, and the cultures that were developed in various parts of the world. The children are given an introduction to physical and cultural geography through the use of wooden puzzle maps and other activities. Studies about countries, flags and activities with objects, land & water observation of animals in nature are all part of geography. Detailed projects on continents, countries, languages and people are carried out through the year.

Science

While Science is not part of Learning’s formal program, we know that it is an area of interest for children. Making hypothesis, testing theories, doing experiments, and recording observations are all part of the program.

UKG4Sensorial

The sensorial materials enable the child to order, classify, and describe sensory impressions in relation, length, width, temperature, mass, color, etc. These materials isolate a defining quality, such as color, size, sound, texture or shape. These are exercises in perception, observation, fine discrimination, and classification that play a major role in helping our children to develop their sense of logic and concentration.

UKG5Physical Education

Our children go outside every day, and are able to use either of the 2 fenced outdoor play areas. During the spring and fall, we take advantage of the amenities in the area to go on nature walks.

Art

Our art program has been developed by our in-house art specialists. We offer a variety of materials (paints, pastels, etc.) for daily use. In addition, we work on major themes and projects such as the Great Masters (painting), the papermaking process, and making felting objects from wool roving.

UKG6Play

We can’t forget about play! We have opportunities every day for children to choose areas to play with. Whether it is blocks, dramatic play, or the myriad of other interesting materials we have in the classroom, play is an important part of the classroom every day.
